As Colorado evolved and its population diversified, Douglas County has held tightly to traditional views, often influenced by fear-mongering ideologues who posit that our region and the broader world are “on a path to destruction.”
It is puzzling that in one of America’s wealthiest areas, too many locals remain fixated on preserving mainstream control over local governance, economics and morality.
This reactionary mindset often creates an unwelcoming atmosphere for anyone whose beliefs, attributes, or moral values differ.
Regrettably, many people around us—our families, neighbors, and friends—experience feelings of mental and physical fear stemming from the influence of what we call The Cabal.
JSNE is non-partisan. In our view, the threats to our community and to the broader American democracy and way of life cannot be adequately framed by partisanship. In fact, we believe modern media and punditry have done a disservice by portraying the core conflict as ‘liberals vs conservatives’, ‘left vs right’
JSNE’s work is shaped by concepts presented in Jane Mayer’s 2016 book, Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right. Mayer’s investigative work over thirty years reveals the highly complex commitment of the wealthiest activist families and corporations (‘top 1%’) to gain unlimited power and wealth, regardless of the negative effects on the rest of us.
Mayer identifies several individuals and families who have provided money and resources, directly impacting the full spectrum, flowing national libertarian ideologies movements down into the Douglas County community – Coors, Anschutz, Daniels, Walton, Leprino, Malone and others.
A pivotal moment in this scenario was the development of Highlands Ranch in the 1980s by the Mission Viejo Company. This ambitious project aimed to replicate a highly conservative community model from Orange County, California. Consequently, Douglas County became a testing ground for right-wing movements and ideologies that resonate on both state and national levels. A notable example of this is the ongoing struggle for influence within the Douglas County School District.
Dissecting the DougCo Cabal
JSNE is focused on gathering and connecting crucial facts about the entrenched and often secretive activities of extreme right-wing players and their ideologies. We stand firmly against the divisive and destructive impacts of rising ideological extremism.
A cabal is a group of people who are united in some close design, usually to promote their private views or interests in an ideology, a state, or another community, often by intrigue and usually without the knowledge of those who are outside their group. The use of this term usually carries negative connotations of political purpose, conspiracy and secrecy. It can also refer to a secret plot or a clique, or it may be used as a verb (to form a cabal or secretly conspire).
As Colorado’s population has become more diverse, many in Douglas County have held tightly to traditional views, often influenced by fear-mongering ideologues who posit that our region and the broader world are “on a path to destruction” due to creeping liberalism.
Given its conservative roots, Douglas County has served as a prototype for right-wing movements and ideologies at the national level. One notable example is the decades-long struggle for control of the Douglas County School District.

The DougCo Cabal represents a narrow ideological view of the world. And The Cabal wants to keep it that way, regardless. But their steadfast support of Trump’s MAGA is increasingly out of step with our community
